History of WIST Extension School North-Central Trinidad
The Extension Division of the West Indies School of Theology, through its Certificate Program has contributed to the development of individuals in ministry since 1978. This division was formed to help church leaders, departmental workers and other members to acquire theological training; thus equipping themselves further in the knowledge of God’s Word.
The school was first housed at the Pentecostal Cathedral, Duke Street, Port of Spain Trinidad. It was relocated briefly to the El Dorado Pentecostal Church (Global Missions Centre), then to the Main Campus in Maracas Valley, then returning to Port of Spain at the District Office in Detour Mall. As the years progressed, the interest for lay church leadership training increased, with schools opening in Curepe, Arima, Sande Grande, Arouca, Couva and Longdenville/Enterprise.
Over Nine Hundred (900) students have accessed and benefited from the school. Graduates were motivated and encouraged to continue on the path of ministry training, enrolling at the Main Campus and at other Seminaries. Some graduates are today serving as Pastors, Departmental Leaders and have returned as lecturers.
The school in 1978 started offering a two-year Certificate Program covering Twenty-four Courses: Theology I, Theology II, Christian Ethics, Old Testament Survey I, Prophets, New Testament I, Homiletics. In its attempt to develop a greater alignment with the Diploma program, the program was adjusted to Twelve (12) courses. As the school continued to advance and responding to academic trends, it was no long prudent to offer a certificate program exceeding Twelve months. As a result of this our one year Certificate in Practical Ministries was established, focusing on specific ministry needs: Biblical, Christian Education, Youth Ministries, Evangelism and Lay Counseling.
This program is also used as an introduction/matriculation to the Diploma program offered at WIST main campus.
